Citation searches: forward chaining

In Citation indexes, you can check which articles cite a particular publication. When doing this, you are searching ahead in time: the literature that cites the particular publication is always more recent than the publication itself.

This is therefore a good way of finding recent, relevant literature. In many databases, it is possible to click the link to an overview of a publication’s cited references.
