Main question

The main question is the central research question and corresponds to the definition of the problem or is directly derived from this. This main question is the starting point for your search. It describes exactly what you want to know about and gives direction to your search. It is very important therefore that the main question is well formulated.

A good main question can be characterized as follows:

  • The question is clear, as are the terms used in the question. A vague question on the other hand can be interpreted in many different ways.
  • The question is specific. After all, you want to be able to search purposefully. A question that is too general, broad, or poorly defined can lead to you becoming lost in a mess of information.
  • The question is relevant. The answer to the question must contribute directly to the solution to your “information problem” and achieving your objective.
  • The question is an “open” question. It is therefore not a question which can only be answered by a “yes” or a “no”.
  • It is possible to find an answer within the available time frame.
  • There are sufficient resources to find the answer.

Only a specific question, which gives direction to your search process and which makes it clear exactly what it is you want to know, will enable you to search effectively and purposefully.

Example:

A poor question: Are there problems with childcare?

  • This is a closed question, it can only be answered by a “yes” or a “no”
  • The question is vague and nonspecific: “problems with childcare” can be interpreted in many different ways
  • The question (if formulated as an open question) is too broad, nonspecific and probably cannot be answered within the available time frame.

A better question: What has been the influence of privatization on childcare in the Netherlands with regard to the problems surrounding waiting lists?

  • This is an open question
  • The question is fairly specific by choosing a market, a time frame (implicitly from 2005 onward) and a perspective
  • The question can be answered; naturally depending on the time available.
