In some databases it is possible to assign your own subject headings to documents: tags, or social tagging.
LibraryThing is an example of a social cataloguing web application in which social tagging is used. Tags make it very easy to find books about a particular subject. The downside is that there are no standards for subject headings, resulting in many different words being used for the same concept.
